Sofia Unicef Matt Miley Galleri Duerr Art Week Kulturnatt Stockholm

Art Week and Culture Night

We believe in cross-cultural meetings, for example when Matt Miley’s strong female trickster is shown together with a single portrait made up of hundreds of unseen children. UNICEF’s For Sofia is every child and no child at the same time, created by the 3D animators behind the films Avatar, Planet of the Apes and TinTin. On Wednesday April 20, Sofia is here to share her story and Galleri Duerr will be starting a ”Silent Auction” in cooperation with Najdron Gallery to benefit UNICEF Children’s Emergency Fund giving aid to affected children. The work up for auction is a portrait photo, size 100 x 100 cm, of UNICEF’s new symbol ”For Sofia” – a collage of hundreds of children from all over the world in one single image. The auction begins directly after UNICEF presents the image at 4 pm and the journalist Nils Resare and digital expert Brit Stakson have spoken. You may make your bid on site at the gallery on Vanadisvägen 29 during Art Week until closing at Stockholm Culture Night on Saturday April 23 at midnight. You may yourself choose if you wish to remain anonymous or if you would like to have your name or your company’s name visible. Click on the following link to learn more about ”For Sofia”.

For each sold piece of Matt Miley’s work Galleri Duerr will be gifting a one-year ”Världsförälderskap”. Why not stop by us this week and become one yourself or as a give away?

Disseminating Sentience MattMiley Galleri Duerr Stockholm Najdron Gallery

Transparent Landscapes 7/4-30/4

Matt Miley’s first solo exhibition in Sweden “Transparent Landscapes” includes three drawings in ink, graphite and aquarelle, each at a height of three meters, as well as his most recent work – “Dissemenating Sentiance” – a collage of nine images drawn on three layers of drafting film. The exhibition is curated by Galleri Duerr, In collaboration with Najdron Gallery.

Life-size bears, mythological characters, birch tree forests, snow, Louisiana swamps, abstraction: These are some of the elements that one finds in Matt Miley’s art. In a transparent landscape, perhaps in the landscape of one’s self, his work depicts uncertainty through images of humans and animals in a state of becoming or becoming undone.

Culture Night – Augmented Reality.

“If Instagram made audio guides, they would probably look like this!”

Finally! After checking out a huge amount of “hard to grasp” apps and almost giving up hope of ever finding anything useful, an email landed in our mailbox this past Thursday! “Pop-up” art? Then we have the perfect solution for you! We can create an audio guide for your exhibitions – anywhere, anytime – for anyone!

Yesterday afternoon we had a 3-hour meeting in our “pop-up” Art Lounge at Clarion Hotel Sign with Screenlab that has created the virtual museum and gallery app Dott,

Tonight, at Stockholm Culture Night, Galleri Duerr is one of the first to bring this app to life and to see what it has the possibility of doing! As a visitor you can give it a try and be a part of our virtuell storytelling. Listen to our artists as they tell in their own words about their works and how they came to be.

Download the app to your phone and bring your own earphones to our Art Lounge at Clarion Sign Hotel tonight. Scan the entire image, drawing or painting with your phone and explore the dots which appear. They connect you directly to our artist’s portraits and films. It works a bit differently on our sculptures, but we are there until midnight tonight to help you! And as always, we are a part of a “work of progress”, so please let us know what you think!

Every day until April 28 from 12 noon to 6 pm (although Saturday April 25 we are there from 5pm-midnight) we will be available in the lounge to tell you about the artists and their art. Please contact us if you would like to meet us outside of this time frame. And of course you can just drop by anytime during Clarion Sign’s open hours to use your Dott app:
Saturday-tuesday 11 – to midnight, and as a hotel guest 24/7!

You will find us in our Art Lounge:

  • Saturday April 25 – 5 pm to midnight (Stockholm Culture Night)
  • Sunday April 26 – 12 pm to 6 pm
  • Monday April 27 – 12 pm to 6 pm
  • Tuesday April 28 – 14 pm to 6 pm

Stockholm Art Week

Artist Talk Matt Miley Thursday April 16 at 7 pm /19. Matt’s work “Assimilation in the Snow” 183 x 305 cm, made in New York/Missisippi, first time showing in Sweden is heavily influenced by his life experiences in the southern United States. During graduate school, Matt pursued an opportunity to study in London and Amsterdam. There, he observed a complex social, cultural, and political environment. Europe bares some similarities to the southern United States but is often completely divergent. Matt’s research involved the critical reason, comparative mythology, and theory in contemporary art. Matt Miley will also talk about his very special layering technique using layers of ink drawings on drafting film.

Galleri Duerr Stockholm Art Week 2015 Clarion SignEach day during Stockholm Art Week April 14-19 at 12 noon, 4 pm and 7 pm Galleri Duerr will hold a storytelling presentation about the on-going project with Alannah Robins’ 1.5 meter tall “A Sculpture in Liquorice”, her oilpaintings “Woman under water”, Nuno Perestrelos poetic large format images about democracy and Matt Mileys “Assimilation in the snow”.

No we did not fail!

closeup_sculpture_re We tried something new – with inspiration from Art Basel using Kickstarter to generate support for selected visual arts projects worldwide, we started our first very own crowdfunding project “A Sculpture in Liquorice”. Alannah Robins’ 1.5 meter tall sculpture is a work in progress – currently made with 35 kg of liquorice and first shown at the Liquorice Festival March 21-22, with over 11 000 visitors. During both the press conference and the Liquorice Festival, Alannah worked on building up the figure’s skirt. Her work drew crowds who enjoyed seeing such a professional contemporary artist in action. Johan Bülow and the Lakrids team from Denmark, who compete internationally in sculpting chocolate, had never seen anything like it. They came with some good advice on how to ensure that the sculpture will be long-lasting. Alannah Robins shared her experience as a sculptor in return. Who knows, maybe we will meet in the international arena. lotteberättar_bw Many interesting meetings and conversations took place during the Liquorice Festival, between art experts and people just interested in learning more. Galleri Duerr’s exhibition “Playfulness and the Lack Thereof” included the American artists Matt Miley and David Eisenhauer and Swedish artists Lina L. Baker and Patrik Lundell – a timely statement on the importance of play in our everyday lives.

We believe art exhibitions are great ways to tell important stories of our time, and that this storytelling is a way to make contemporary art more accessible to everyone, regardless of age. That is why Galleri Duerr has been operating as a pop-up gallery since June of 2014, with the goal of reaching out to a wider and more diversified audience with high quality art. Last year the gallery participated in the Affordable Art Fair Stockholm as one of the best selling galleries, with 14 500 visitors. People from 76 countries have found our website and we have since then been invited to exhibit in different countries with national and international contemporary artists.

Matt Miley – Playfulness and the Lack Thereof

“My work is a reflection of my journey to find a higher awareness of my moment to moment experience. This type of venture has traditionally been confined to and referenced by rigid and crumbling institutions. To transcend these systems of thought, I intend for my work to signify psychological change that dismantles and rebuilds recurrently. I use willed introspection and mythological propositions to guide me, as schema, through this journey”

Matt Miley Galleri Duerr Lakritsfestivalen 2015Matt is a visual artist originally from the southern United States. Following the completion of his Master’s degree in Fine Arts at Florida State University where graduate students participate in annual trips to Art Basel Miami Beach international art fair. Matt moved to New York City in 2009 to work at the School of Visual Arts. Matt Miley is currently living and making art in Stockholm.

His work has been exhibited internationally. Segments of Matt’s work are heavily influenced by his life experiences in the southern United States. Matt completed a Bachelor degree at Mississippi College.

During his time at Florida State University he built a body of thesis work that involved aspects of narrative drawing and painting mixed abstract and ambiguous segments in large scale. In 2010 he collaborated with a colleague in Philadelphia to generate an exhibition entitled “When She Strikes”. The work involved two large large-scale 6 x 16 foot drawings, video, and found sound was exhibited in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. He has also been involved in building and co-directing the Pinion Gallery in New York. The gallery was physically based in Brooklyn and hosted seven exhibitions. Matt recently completed a series of paintings entitled “Surface; Cataract; Inundate” involving zoomorphic and landscape features in a state of becoming or becoming undone.

Matt Miley is a part of Galleri Duerr’s exhibition ”Playfulness and the Lack Thereof” at the Liquorice Festival in Stockholm, March 21-22, last year with a visitor count of 10 000. The show also includes the Swedish artists Lina L. Baker and Patrik Lundell (who has just returned to Stockholm after two years in Florence), American artist David Eisenhauer  and Irish artist Alannah Robins who is creating a full scale sculpture in liquorice!
