For centuries the past has been the source of inspiration for artists, not least those dedicated to the craft of musical composition. It was merely the idea of Greek music and the role that it purportedly played in ancient society that gave birth, at the turn of the seventeenth century, to the most extravagant of all genres, opera.
Festival O/MODƏRNT celebrates this “looking back” to the past by exploring the relationships between the work of old composers and the artistic and intellectual creations of modern culture, be it in music, art, dance, theatre, film, poetry, literature, academia and so forth.
O/ModƏrnt is a unique concept devised by the violinist Hugo Ticciati that explores the vital connections between ancient and contemporary culture and consists of the following interconnected strands: Festival O/ModƏrnt, the weeklong summer festival at Ulriksdals slottsteater Confidencen, O/ModƏrnt Kammarkorkester, the resident string orchestra at Musikaliska, O/ModƏrnt String Quartet, inaugurated in 2016, O/ModƏrnt commissioning of new works in all media and Educational Outreach, in conjunction with the specialist Music School Lilla Akademien.
O/ModƏrnt is gathering an international reputation for innovative programming and concerts with the most exciting and renowned artists in their field as well as developing outreach projects with underprivileged children, supporting artists fees and commissioning new works.
Hugo Ticciati, artistic director, is passionate about exploring the art of music and its relations with the world we live in. In directing the festival O/MODƏRNT Hugo hopes to share such exploration with musicians, composers, dancers, artists, poets, academics and leading spiritual figures from all over the world.
